چکیده

The ionization with temperature of weakly bound muonium atoms in undoped CdS has been studied using the technique of muon spin relaxation in a transverse magnetic field of 10 mT. For this atom the Coulomb binding energy between the muon and the electron is sufficiently small that the Landau diamagnetic term determines the magnetic behavior of the system: due to the diamagnetic interaction the muon precession in a transverse magnetic field exhibits a frequency shift of approximately 0.5% around the ionization temperature.  2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The Muonium Atom as a Probe of Physics beyond the Standard Model

The observed interactions between particles are not fully explained in the successful theoretical description of the standard model to date. Due to the close confinement of the bound state muonium (M = μe) can be used as an ideal probe of quantum electrodynamics and weak interaction and also for a search for additional interactions between leptons. Of special interest is the lepton number viola...

High resolution spectroscopy of muonium

The hydrogen-like muonium atom (μe) consists of a positive muon (μ) and an electron (e−). Since it was first observed by Hughes et al. in 1960 [1], a series of precision experiments could be carried out testing bound state Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and the nature of the muon as a point-like leptonic particle [2]. Precision values for fundamental constants could be obtained, including the fi...

Past, Present and Future of Muonium

Muonium, the atom which consists of a positive muon and an electron, has been discovered by a team led by Vernon W. Hughes in 1960. It is in many respects the most ideal atom available from nature. Due to the close confinement in the bound state muonium can be used as an ideal probe of electro-weak interaction, including particularly Quantum Electrodynamics, and to search for additional yet unk...

A positive muon (µ +) and an electron (e −) form the the hydrogen-like muonium atom (M =µ + e −). Since it consists of two leptonic particles which are according to present knowledge point-like, accurate calculations of its level energies can be performed in the framework of standard theory. In particular, the theoretical description of this system is possible almost exclusively by Quantum Elec...

Quantum Mechanics of a Charged Particle in an Axial Magnetic Field

We study some aspects of the quantum theory of a charged particle moving in a time-independent, uni-directional magnetic field. When the field is uniform, we make a few clarifying remarks on the use of angular momentum eigenstates and momentum eigenstates with the diamagnetism of a free electron gas as an example. When the field is non-uniform but weakly varying, we discuss both perturbative an...
